This Design

This vintage Old Faithful Erupting at Yellowstone National Park plaque is a historically accurate adaptation of the original c1938 Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Yellowstone National Park WPA poster. One of the places the America the Beautiful song is about! This wood wall sign design features sustainable real birch wood and American timber with the art printed directly on it. Hand-painted edges. The main body of the tall sign is true to the Robin’s egg blue original color used in the historic poster. The ¼” thick edges of the plaque are hand painted brown matching the border. The bold block lettering used in the original screen-printed posters appears across the base of the image and reads “YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE,” and in the center of the area appears the official Seal from that time with a buffalo and eagle. Filling the face of the tall sign is Old Faithful erupting in all its glory and white high altitude wispy cirrus clouds streaking the sky above the tree line. “AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL” appears at the top in the blue and tan colors used elsewhere in the sign. Two wood struts run across the back to stand the wall décor plaque off the wall about ½” for nice depth and effect. The sign’s back is hot-branded rear by hand with a real hot branding iron to prove it is made-in-America and hand-made.

The Backstory

Once upon a time Janet and I were fortunate enough to find ourselves standing all alone before Old Faithful in the dead of winter at 20 degrees below zero when it erupted. Silence all around, the hiss of the steam, growing into a rush, and then to the roar of the steam. My thoughts wandered to whether once upon another time one of North America's many dinosaurs or woolly mammoths had stood where we stood and watched, linking us back and forth through time.
